The Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia has received the special representative of the OSCE presidency

On February 23rd, Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia Vigen Sargsyan received the special representative of the Austrian OSCE presidency on matters concerning the South Caucasus, Günther Bächler.

The Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia expressed willingness to aid the implementation of the priorites of the Austrian presidency of the OSCE, directed towards the settlement of conflicts, decrease in tensions and restoration of an atmosphere of mutual trust.

 

Presenting the concerning situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact, Vigen Sargsyan expressed the importance of efforts made towards the establishment of international investigative mechanisms for cases of ceasefire violations, and highlighted the necessity for the global community to condemn Azerbaijan for its infringements of all international arms control regimes.

 

Speaking about the situation surrounding the OSCE office in Yerevan, Vigen Sargsyan expressed the importance of the organization's role in the development of democratic institutions in Armenia, the modernization of the electoral process and the improvements in human rights. Stressing the fact that Armenia's cooperation with the OSCE is based on values and principles, the Minister of Defense considers the termination of the organization's activities of by Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan's attempts to discredit the organization's initiatives, and blackmail it, as unacceptable.

 

The representative of the OSCE presidency reaffirmed the need to increase the organization's efforts to settle the conflict and reduce tensions, as well as preserve the reputation of the organization, and expressed hopes that the difficult situation surrounding the Yerevan office will resolved to the benefit of the interests of the OSCE and Armenia.

 

The parties also expressed oppinions concerning cooperation mechanisms for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
