Charles Aznavour

World renowned singer and actor Charles Aznavour was born on 22 May in 1924 in Paris. He is the author of over a thousand songs, including many international hits. He has played in 60 films, sold more than 100 million discs. He is a staunch supporter of Armenia. His songs “For You, Armenia,” “They fell” (dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Genocide), as well as autobiographic songs contain Armenian themes. Immediately after the 1988 Spitak earthquake, he founded the "Aznavour for Armenia" charity. Since May 2009, he is Armenia's ambassador to Switzerland and Armenia’s permanent representative in UN Office, Geneva. He is also Armenia’s Honorary Ambassador to UNESCO. In 1964, 1996 and 2006, he gave concerts in Armenia. He was awarded the highest state awards of France. Armenian citizen (26.12.2008). Aznavour’s statue was erected in Gyumri, one of the Yerevan squares was named after him. He was awarded the Gregory the Illuminator Order. National Hero of Armenia (27.05.2004). He was awarded the highest Hayrenik Order of the Republic of Armenia.
