Defence minister receives Council of Europe delegate

Armenian Defence Minister Davit Tonoyan received on 4 March Council of Europe Human Rights Director General Christos Giakoumopoulos, and the head of the CoE office in Yerevan Natalya Vutova.

The prupose of the meeting was to discuss the legal and institutional mechanisms of human rights protection in the military and the cooperation with the Council of Europe in this area.

Minister Tonoyan briefed the guest on various initiatives aimed at strengthening of the human rights protection in the armed forces. In the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, he drew Giakoumopoulos’ attention on the importance of compliance with the norms and requirements of the international humanitarian law, calling on international organisations to pursue the rights of civilian and military prisoners of the conflicting parties to fair judicial proceedings.

The meeting also discussed other issues on the agenda of Armenia-European Union cooperation.
