Summary of Ministry of Defence’s priority tasks and activities in 2017

1. In accordance with the paragraphs 150 and 151 of the 2017 Republic of Armenia Government Action Plan approved by Government Decision No 122-N of January 12, 2017, the Ministry of Defence has submitted to the Government:

1) Draft Law on Status of Military Service and Servicemen.

The draft law was approved by the Republic of Armenia Government and submitted to the National Assembly; adopted by the National Assembly on November 29, 2017.

The law incorporated the former Law on Military Service, the Law on Persons Liable for Call-up, and the Law on Social Security of Servicemen and Their Family Members, stipulated the new policies in the field, including the "I Have the Honour" and "I am" programs, refined the processes of compulsory and contractual military services, those of the organization and implementation of the reserve and reserve training, regulated the social and legal guarantees of servicemen and their family members as well as persons alike.

2) Draft Law on Defence.

The draft law was approved by the Republic of Armenia Government and submitted to the National Assembly; adopted by the National Assembly on November 29.

The law incorporated the former Law on Defence, the Law on Mobilization Preparation and Mobilization, and the Law on Use of Vehicles for Defence, ensuring the implementation of the Constitution amendments in the defence field, specifying the powers of the state, territorial and local governments, the responsibilities of organizations and citizens, the activities of the armed forces and other troops, the relations with regard to the military liability, mobilization preparation and mobilization.

2. In accordance with Paragraph 132 of the list of priority issues set by the Government Decree No 122-N of January 12, 2017, the enhancement of the strategic containment system has been recognized as a priority task for the Ministry of Defence.

As steps to implement the priority task, antitank and assault weapons, anti-aircraft radar stations, thermal and night vision devices have been purchased and put into service on the front line, the Armed Forces structure and their management system has been reviewed, allied and partnership relations were developed in the main directions (CSTO, CIS, NATO, EU, RF, US, Germany, Italy, Greece, Lebanon, Belorussia, China, Iran, Georgia) resulting in signing and inaugurating a number of international agreements, the Armenia-NATO 2017-19 Individual Partnership Action Plan has been approved.
