Armenian Defence Minister Vigen Sargsyan and Izmirlian Foundation Vice President Greg Jerejian signed on December 13 a memorandum on the support of the Vazgen Sargsyan Military University Modernization Project at the Vazgen Sargsyan Military University.

Under the Memorandum, the Foundation will allocate $5 million for the implementation of a large-scale project of renovation and reconstruction of the university.

In his remarks, Minister Sargsyan stressed that the Ministry of Defence pays great attention to the military education and the first significant step taken in that direction was the transfer of the Monte Melkonian Military School to a modern complex in Dilijan. The next stage is to make the Military University comply with the highest international standards.

"The working group is now discussing the process of uniting the Vazgen Sargsyan Military University and the Marshall Armenak Khanperian Aviations University to have one military university with several departments and divisions. It is expected that the new university will be located on the territory of the Vazgen Sargsyan Military University while adding new buildings," Sargsyan said, emphasizing that the Izmirlian Foundation has been supporting the university since its establishment, and today, by signing a new memorandum, it is making yet another contribution to it.

During the event, architect Erik Hovhannisyan presented the university’s renovation project, under which a super modern educational complex with more comfortable barracks, libraries, computer classes and sports complex will be built.

The construction is to be completed by September 1, 2019.

The cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and the Izmirlian Foundation has a history of years. Since 2001, the Foundation has been providing financial support to the project set up to help the children of the servicemen killed in Armenia and Artsakh and the children of servicemen with first-degree disabilities. During the past years, the Foundation has also provided considerable assistance to the Vazgen Sargsyan Military University for modernization of its infrastructure and improvement of the barracks.
