Delegation headed by Armenian defence minister visits USA

On November 13, the delegation headed by Armenian Defence Minister Vigen Sargsyan paid a visit to UCLA.

Sargsyan delivered a lecture on public leadership for the students and faculty of UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Relations.

Sargsyan also presented the process of the large-scale reforms currently taking place in Armenia's army, and in particular, the "Nation-Army" concept and its implementation in different sectors of public life. He also spoke about the Karabakh conflict, Armenia-Turkey relations and other regional issues. Following the lecture, the attendees asked questions to Minister Sargsyan.

On the same day, Vigen Sargsyan met with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Later in the day, the Armenian delegation was hosted at the Consulate General of the Republic of Armenia in Los Angeles, where Sargsyan answered the questions of the leading American-Armenian media outlets. He explained in detail the advantages of the draft Law on Status of Military Service and Servicemen as well as the programs implemented in the Armed Forces. Sargsyan answered questions regarding, among another issues, the armament of the Armenian Armed Forces, the works carried out at combat outposts with regard to their engineering and technical equipment, the projects aimed at developing the military industry, the border situation, the conclusions made after the April war, the prospects of the Karabakh conflict settlement.

 On November 13, the delegation was hosted at the Western Prelacy of the Armenian Church of America. Following his meeting with the Armenian community leaders and community representatives, Sargsyan addressed a large number of the community members with an extensive speech, speaking about the modernization projects being implemented in the Armenian army. In particular, he talked about the enhancement of the army's efficiency and making the military service more attractive, the development of the military industry, the qualitative reforms in the military education programs, the necessity of developing a knowledgeable army and a number of other issues. Sargsyan detailed the activities carried out on the frontline, the priorities of acquiring new smart weaponry, the wide-ranging social programs implemented in the Armed Forces. He told the audience about the plans of setting up a new modern military hospital and the rehabilitation centre for the disabled servicemen to open just in a few weeks. He also spoke about the relocation of the Monte Melkonian Military School to Dilijan, assuring them that the military education institution is turning into the best high school in Armenia, a first step towards a deep modernization of the entire military education system.

At the end of the speech, Sargsyan answered the questions of the participants.

The delegation wrapped up its visit to the US and headed to Canada to participate in a UN peacekeeping conference in Vancouver.
