An Agreement Signed on Armenian-Lithuanian Military Cooperation
2012-06-24
On June 24, the delegation headed by the Minister of National Defense of Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė arrived in Armenia on a two-day official visit.
After the welcoming ceremony held for the delegation, they were met by Seyran Ohanyan and the senior staff of the Defense Ministry and General staff of the ARM Armed Forces. The delegations discussed issues of mutual interest in the defense sector as well as issues regarding the development of the bilateral cooperation. During the discussions on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Lithuanian side mentioned that they are for the peaceful resolution of the conflict.
The Defense Ministers of Armenia and Lithuania signed an agreement on military cooperation between the Defense Ministry of Armenia and the National Defense of Lithuania. Some provisions of the previous agreement, signed back in 2002, which has been a legal base for the military cooperation between the two countries, has become irrelevant since Lithuania joined NATO and EU. There is also a need to make some provisions correspond to the existing requirements of the current relations between the two countries.  The agreement implies cooperation in fields like Civil Control of the armed forces, Defense Policy and Strategy, Defense Planning and Budgeting, Support to the International Peace, Humanitarian Operations, Logistics etc. During the official visit, the Minister of National Defense of Lithuania also visited Military Institute after V. Sargsyan and was introduced to its educational programs, and was present to the defilee of the Special Forces.
In the scope of the visit, the Minister will be hosted by the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandian and the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II.
